MURRAY COD PERFECT SPECIES FOR
TANKS (RAS ) FLOATING RACEWAY AND CAGES
MURRAY RIVER
Murray cod commercial production for the table, are mainly suited to intensive recirculation aquaculture systems, (RAS), They can be grown in ponds BUT the stocking density is not commercial, only about 200 fish per hectare, and growth rates will vairy.
In a RAS, the correct stocking densities will limit hierarchy and cannibalism, regular grading should be done to keep size classes separated. (Some fish will grow faster than others.) This is a common practice for other species of apex predators such as barramundi. Even silver perch and jade perch will contest for space if the stocking densities are not correct for the species. If not graded, fighting will develop, even cannibalism could occur.
Murray cod are generally quite hardy, when water quality is maintained. Stocking densities in tanks of about 40kg/m3 unless the system will allow higher densities. 80-100 kg/m³ are routinely achieved in good RAS facilities.
Water should be clean, with a pH between 6-8, dissolved oxygen above 3mg/L and free ammonia levels of less than 0.1mg/L. Temperatures should be maintained at 24-25° C. Murray cod may tolerate conditions outside of this range for short periods of time. Prolonged exposure outside these ranges will stress the fish and leave them open to attack from several parasites, fungal and bacterial infections, and viruses. Even if no infection occurs, growth rates may be affected. Growth rates of about 600 grams in 6 months at about 25°C are very achievable. One kilo in 12 months and three kilos in two years have been successfully achieved in commercial facilities. Afterall, these sizes are still baby fish.

WHERE THEY COME FROM
Murray cod are ONLY native to Australia. They are native to the Murray Darling River Basins, shown here in blue. The Murray Darling River Basins covers over a million square kilometres. (Over 386,000 square miles)
-
Many rivers flow into the Murray and Darling rivers.
The habitat of these huge river basins varies enormously. Some sections are clear flowing, other parts are still and turbid.
-
Wide ranging habitat
The river basins extend across a huge area of Australia, from Queensland to South Australia. Over this massive area there is a range of climates with hot dry areas to relatively moderate temperatures. This makes the Murray Cod a very adaptable fish ideally suitable for aquaculture.
